In order to get a beta access code for Valorant, prospective players needed to watch Valorant Twitch streams for at least two hours with their Riot account linked to their Twitch account. The difficulty of getting into the beta makes these numbers even more impressive.

What’s more, it seems as though Riot Games’ publicity stunt of requiring people to watch its game before playing it has paid off, as players watched over 470 million hours of gameplay on Twitch during the closed beta, and even broke the Twitch record for the most number of hours watched in one day following its 34 million hour debut.

Of course, exactly how accurate this is has been brought into question, as there were many viewers which simply left the stream running in hopes of getting a code while doing other things, but it is still impressive. With Valorant’s full release just around the corner, it will be interesting to see if viewership and player base maintain this level or drop off now that it will be available to everyone.

Valorant releases on June 2nd, 2020 exclusively for PC.
