One of the most popular posts on the Valorant Reddit today is a video of a player being taken out by Sova’s Shock Bolt ability. In the video, the player makes their way to the enemy spike and begins to disable it. However, the player gets a surprise when a Shock Bolt comes from out of nowhere, killing them and making them lose the game as every member of their team had been killed.

While it seems like a Valorant technical issue, what seems to have happened is that after the spike was planted, the enemy Sova fired two Shock Bolts into the air. The bolts took so long to come back down that by the time they did, the players had found the spike and had begun to disable it.
The reason this works is because the game doesn’t have a skybox, which would work like a sort of lid on top of the game’s maps. If it did have one, then the Shock Bolts would have come back down much quicker or would have hit the box and wouldn’t have fallen down and hit the player. Valorant players seem to be using this as a real strategy for playing Sova.
Looking at the comments on the Valorant Reddit suggests that players are frustrated with the game’s lack of skybox. However, it’s unclear if developer Riot Games chose not to put a skybox in the game on purpose. There are several other characters with projectile abilities such as Viper’s Snakebite and Riot may feel that the game isn’t as fun to play without these surprise, falling projectile moments.
However, if it is just an oversight by the Valorant development team, Riot may be able to fix this and allow closed beta players to test it before the full release of the game. Riot has just released one Valorant patch that fixes several map exploits, reduces lag issues, and nerfs characters such as Razer. It is possible that the next Valorant patch could add a skybox, but nothing has been officially announced.
Valorant will launch sometime during Summer 2020 for the PC.
