Sentinel agents are those who are most likely to hold back on the battlefield. Whether their primary job is healing or supporting their team, they aren’t the types to charge in first with guns blazing. If players like to slow-play and support their teammates, then a Sentinel agent is a necessary part of any strategic team that could be just right for them.
4 Chamber
One of the most significant changes in recent Valorant Meta has been the nerfing of Chamber as an agent. While some players didn’t consider Chamber to be much of a Sentinel, he was considered one of the most popular and significant agents for professional play until the 5.12 patch changed Chamber more in one swift blow than any patch has changed an agent since the initial release of Valorant.
This nerf came in the form of changes to every piece of Chamber’s utility. Instead of two teleport abilities that Chamber can move between on the map, he has one teleport that he can snap back to within a certain range. The length of time it takes him to pull out his gun after a teleport was also increased, making Chamber’s teleport abilities nearly useless in many situations. His weaponry isn’t as good, his abilities and capabilities have been greatly reduced, and some fans are even going so far as to suggest that Riot Games “straight murdered him” with the recent patch. While changes were necessary as Chamber was not only the best Sentinel agent but a necessary part of any team that reduced strategic options for team make-up at high levels, there is no doubt that Riot Games took it a little too far and made Chamber nearly redundant instead.
3 Killjoy
Killjoy is an agent that can be hugely influential on how her team decides to play the game. Much more than most agents, Killjoy can leave her team worry-free for a period of time from a variety of angles using a utility like her turret and her alarm bot. Both of these added together allow Killjoy to basically defend a site by herself when needed, and give early warning to her team if the enemy is headed in that direction.
Especially in lower-level games, opposition players won’t often be able to spot the key signs needed to stop Killjoy’s defenses from alerting her entire team and slowing the enemy down. Her turret can do a lot of damage if left alone, and her swarm grenades can be strategically placed to either guard the spike once it is planted or possibly to compliment the alarm bot and slow any enemy charge towards the site. The easy combining of her utility makes Killjoy one of the easier characters in the game to master, but unfortunately, many of her plays fall behind slightly when it comes to high-level play and aren’t as useful on the big stages. Still, Killjoy’s ultimate ability, named after herself, is one of the best in the game and provides the surest panic in an enemy team of almost any ult, as it can clear a site immediately and force enemies to abandon round wins at crucial moments, completely changing the game.
2 Sage
Simply known as the healer, Sage has almost always been considered a vital piece of the puzzle in team strategy at every level of the game in Valorant. Even Skye, another healing character, has not changed the near-necessity of having Sage on the team as frequently as possible. Not only does Sage have the ability to heal a teammate or herself, possibly even multiple times during a round depending on how long the round and Sage herself lasts. She also has the ability to bring a teammate back from the dead with her ultimate ability, an enormous advantage that can drastically shift the nature of a round in her team’s favor.
Sage also has a wall, which can be hugely helpful to her team as it can completely block off entrances onto a site she is helping defend, allowing her team a measure of comfort or allowing Sage herself to last longer if she is defending an area alone and is in danger of being overwhelmed. Besides this, Sage can also get herself out of a tricky spot using her slow orbs to force enemies’ pace down long enough for her to retreat or gain backup. With the healing factor added to everything else needed for a good Sentinel role, Sage is the complete package.
1 Cypher
She has however recently been overtaken as the best Sentinel. While Chamber was recently demolished by a nerf, Cypher has recently been greatly improved as an agent and is probably now the best of the Sentinel agents in the game. The biggest point of a Sentinel, beyond teleporting around or healing teammates, has always been to protect the flank of their team and find ways to support their teammates.
Cypher is currently the best at this due to the impressive buffs to his abilities. His tripwires are a great and sneaky way of protecting the flank of his team as they charge on a site or try to keep enemies off of one. His camera is a great way of gaining knowledge about enemy locations and there are plenty of spots just as sneaky for placing it on the map. His cages are great for stalling and blinding enemies and helping his team hide as they attack or defend the site, and his ultimate can scan enemy locations to reveal them all on the map, enabling Cypher to give his team vital information that hugely helps with strategy.
